About the SJHS Band Program and Classes Offered
The SJHS Band Program has two goals for every person that is involved: 1) That every student develops a sense of understanding and appreciation of music and 2) That every student develops skills to become an enlightened citizen and person. This is how a student’s success will truly be measured in band.
The first goal will be accomplished through a number of musical disciplines. Throughout the year, we will take time to listen to recordings of music. We will discuss topics of music theory and music history as it relates to the music we are rehearsing in class. Every student will also be provided multiple opportunities to perform/audition in a venue other than a rehearsal or concert. As a musician, it is important to study and understand music through all of these different mediums in order to develop a high level of musicianship.
The second goal will be accomplished throughout not only this year, but their entire time in the program. By participating in band, each student has the chance to develop a sense of pride in being part of something bigger than themselves. When a student learns to put the band before themselves, they develop a sense of individual responsibility, as well responsibility to the group. These characteristics are necessary not only for success in band, but in life.
A student’s success does not depend on how many correct notes they play in a song or what place their group comes in at a competition. It depends on how much they grow as musicians and people, and what they take with them from this experience when they leave. We hope that every student has a successful year!
